Sacraments

The doctrine of seven sacraments is often accepted in the Orthodox Church, especially those who have been more influenced by Roman Scholasticism. No Orthodox Council has ever limited the sacraments to that number, and some Orthodox Churches do not accept that any particular number can ever be assigned. Some say the central sacrament is the Eucharist; others say the essential sacrament is Baptism, preferably by triple immersion in flowing water. Other holy mysteries are Chrismation (confirmation), which immediately follows baptism by anointing with chrism; Penance (confession); Holy Orders; Marriage; and Unction (anointing of the sick). Some highly respected Church Fathers list other sacraments, including Monastic Tonsure, Christian Burial, the Great Blessing of Water, Consecration of the Holy Myron, and Consecration of a Church. Some Fathers consider the Church itself is the greatest Sacrament God has given us.
