Deacon:  Wisdom. Stand up. Hear the Holy Gospel.

Priest:   Peace to you all.

People:  And to your spirit.

Deacon:  A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew
[14:22-34]

People:  Glory to You Lord. Glory to You.

Priest:   Listen.

Deacon:

At that time, Jesus told the disciples to get in the boat and go to the other side of the lake, while he sent the crowds away.

After sending the crowds away, he went alone into the hills to pray.

When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat was now far away on the lake battling a heavy sea with a headwind.

In the fourth watch of the night, walking on the lake he went to them. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified.

They cried, 'It is a ghost', and screamed in fear.

But immediately Jesus called to them saying, 'Courage. It is me. Do not be afraid.'

Peter answered, 'Lord, if it is you, call me to come across the water to you.'

'Come', said Jesus.

So Peter got out of the boat and walked across the water towards Jesus. But as soon as he felt the strength of the wind, he was filled with fear, and began to sink.

'Lord save me', he cried.

Jesus stretched out his hand straight away, held him, and said, 'Man of little faith, why did you doubt?'

Then they got into the boat and the wind fell. The men in the boat bowed before him saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.'

So they made the crossing, and landed at Gennesaret.

People:  Glory to You Lord, Glory to You
