In the past 17 years, the Assyrian Church of the East, Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, in conjunction with the Australian Government, has been successful in the approval of 5000 applications of Assyrians who have migrated to Australia from countries such as Jordan, Turkey and so forth. Upon their migration, the Church has provided assistance in commencing their new lives and establishing a brighter future for their children. His Grace Bishop Mar Meelis Zaia has been instrumental in obtaining loans intended for the purchase of airline tickets, which are repaid in small portions, and thus not enforcing any financial stress upon the migrated families. Furthermore, His Grace has also taken responsibilities of a Co-Signer (Guarantor) for many families, who to date have fulfilled their loan repayment agreements without any delay. This has gained His Grace the admiration of many sons and daughters of the Church and Assyrian Nation (non-members of the Church). His Grace has assisted them in rebuilding their lives in this country within the first year of their arrival, so that no burden is placed upon their relatives and family members. Migrated families were also exempted from annual Church subscription for the first year, while they were recognised as registered Church members. The Church has also provided financial assistance towards the funeral services of those newly arrived families in the event of a death occurring in the family. source: http://www.assyrianchurch.com.au/
